Hurricane Igor - Sunday 19 September - snippets as I make it through the day

11.00 a.m. - happy to report that I didn't miss a single episode of Coronation Street (2 and a half hours of it) this morning as cable and electricity still working fine.  Not so happy to report that I had no excuse not to hit that big pile of ironing that has been sitting there post cruise waiting for me to tackle it.

11.45 a.m. - Have been given a lot of packaged meat by friends who don't have the benefit of a wonderful landlord who has passed as an extra long extension lead in the event the power goes out. He has a generator and has promised to hook us up if the power goes so that we can keep the fridge/freezer going.

Was thinking of telling Trish and Neil that our power went and unfortunately the landlords generator didn't work and that we had to cook all the meat on the bar-b-q in order not to waste it - do you think our [ good ] friends will fall for it or will I get caught out with lamb and mint sauce spilled down the front of my shirt!

12.00 - Have decided not to risk relying on the landlords generator so have polished off tub of Haagen Daaz ice-cream sat in the freezer with my name on it - now feel quite ill.  Not exactly healthy eating - but this is of course an emergency and in this day and age one cannot afford to waste one single penny on spoilt food!

12.30 - Hubby in a decidedly good mood.  Unlike a lot of others on the island we still have both electricity and cable on the TV so he is happy to mong (Brit word for doing nothing and lazing around) out on the couch and watch that while I try furiously to think of ways to skip outside and take more photos without messing my hair.

Facebook has been brilliant - it's a great way of keeping in touch with our friends.  I think that half of Bermuda are holding hurricane parties to help while away the hours and to numb the effects of no TV and no air con should the power go out.  We are very lucky in Bermuda that we have such well built houses that can withstand pretty much anything - the worst of the damage will be to trees and greenery.

Storm is really building up now, we have a fence at the top of the wall and I'm wondering if it's going to go as it's wobbling big time at the moment and that's before the hurricane has hit.......

  1. Penny...your comment on the ice cream made me laugh out loud. Here in NJ, when a snowstorm is predicted and fears of being stuck at home take hold, so many hit the grocery stores to stock up on milk, bread and eggs. For what, french toast? Not me...cheetos, cookies, twinkies, beer and wine is what one REALLY needs! Here's hoping you remain safe!

  2. Penny, I love your sense of humor! The ice cream comment made me laugh so. You have such a great outlook and lucky you still having your power (at least when you wrote this). Here's hoping you keep power because that makes all the difference. Just loving your blog and wishing you well!
